In Italy the Cane Corso was used for different and varied jobs that, on the one hand were adapted to its steady and friendly nature and on the other hand to its impressive physical capability and its durability under especially severe conditions. They were used as guard and protection dogs, because an alert and active, but also steady and obedient dog was needed for these kind of jobs. They were used as guard dogs, as large animal hunting dogs, and as cattle dogs. Because of the great and rare variety of different qualities and exceptional intelligence, the Cane Corso could use could be used as an excellent work and guard dog outside, and as a gentle dog, patient with all the family in the house. Very soon the Cane Corso became the companion to farmers in southern Italy and an inseparable part of the rural family.
